The Brick Ovens

This is a very A-typical Kahlo painting. If she didn't admit to painting it I would never guess that it was a Kahlo painting. It was painted in early 1954 while she was confined to her bed recovering from the amputation of her right leg.

Here, she paints herself beside a burning brick oven …perhaps a symbol of the crematorium oven that would one day soon consume her own body. This painting, as well as others painted in the last days of her life, lacks the quality and detail for which Frida was known. Frida is not even recognizable in this painting. She says she never finished the painting. She put it aside to continue work on another commissioned work in which Frida's face appears in the center of a large sunflower. When it was nearly completed, she destroyed it saying that the painting portrayed her with an energy and vitality that she no longer possessed.

Esta es una atípica pintura de Kahlo. Si ella no hubiera admitido el pintarlo, nunca hubiera supuesto que era un cuadro de Kahlo. Fue pintado a principios de 1954, mientras estaba confinada en cama recuperándose de la amputación de su pierna derecha.

Aquí, se pinta al lado de un horno de ladrillos ardiendo…quizás un símbolo del horno crematorio que un día consumiría su propio cuerpo. Este cuadro, así como otros pintados en los últimos días de su vida, carecen de la calidad y detalle por los cuales Frida era famosa. Frida ni siquiera es reconocible en esta pintura. Frida dijo que nunca finalizó el cuadro. Lo dejó de lado para continuar trabajando en un encargo, en el cual su cara aparecía en el centro de un gran girasol. Cuando estaba casi completo, lo destruyó, diciendo que la pintura la retrataba con una energía y vitalidad que ya no poseía.
