Without Hope

A lack of appetite resulting from her many surgeries and numerous illnesses, left Frida very thin. Her doctor, Dr Eloesser, prescribed complete bed rest and a fattening diet. In this painting, the artist portrays what she considered to be a "forced feeding" diet. The wooden structure that once held her canvases for painting now holds a funnel that continuously feeds her. Not even the sugar skull on top of the heap makes the Entrée look appetizing. Her arms seem to be pinned beneath the blankets and she is unable to control the situation….the situation seems to be "Without Hope".

In her diary, Frida wrote the following entry about this painting:

"I would not wish to harbor
the slightest hope.
Everything moves to the beat
of what's enclosed in the belly."

On the back of the painting Frida inscribed the last two lines of the diary entry.

Some look at this painting and see the food being regurgitated rather than consumed. You can judge for yourself but I think clearly it's being consumed.

La falta de apetito, consecuencia de sus muchas operaciones quirúrgicas y numerosas enfermedades, dejo a Frida muy delgada. Su médico, el doctor Eloesser, le recetó reposo en cama y una dieta para hacerla engordar. En este retrato, la artista retrató lo que ella consideraba una dieta de alimentación forzada. La estructura de madera que sostenía sus lienzos ahora sostiene un embudo que la alimenta continuamente. Ni siquiera la calavera de azúcar en la parte superior de la comida hace que el plato sea apetitoso. Sus brazos parecen estar atrapados bajo las mantas y parece incapaz de controlar la situación…la situación parece ser "Sin esperanza".

En su diario, Frida escribió la siguiente nota acerca de este cuadro:

"Yo no quisiera abrigar
Ni la menor esperanza.
Todo se mueve el compás
De lo que encierra la panza"

En la parte de atrás del cuadro Frida inscribió las dos ultimas líneas de la nota en el diario.

Algunos miran a esta pintura y ven la comida siendo regurgitada en lugar de consumida. Puede juzgar por si mism@s pero creo que claramente está siendo consumida.
