The Chick

For this painting, as well as others, there are two conflicting schools of thought as to its meaning. Some say the Chick in the painting is the fragile and threatened Frida while others are convinced that, because of its portly stature and confident pose, it is Frida's husband Diego Rivera.

If it is indeed Frida, then the painting probably symbolizes Frida's fragile emotional and physical state at the time. Her crumbling relationship with Diego, the death of her father and her worsening health and pending back surgery all have drained her emotionally. The fragile baby chick, Kahlo, is being threatened by two spiders and stands there powerlessly waiting to meet it's destiny.

If the Chick in the painting is Diego, then the painting takes on a completely different meaning. The Chick sits unprotected on a pile of broken twigs and seems to be unaware of , or unconcerned with, the situation. The debris on which he stands symbolizes his crumbling relationship with Kahlo. The lilac in the language of flowers is symbolic of fidelity. The bouquet of lilacs in the painting is shrouded in the web of the spiders…the Chick (Diego), is unable to get to them.

Since Kahlo left no written or verbal documentation on this painting we can only speculate as to its true meaning.

Para esta pintura, así como para otras, hay dos escuelas de pensamiento en conflicto, en lo que se refiere a su significado. Algunos dicen que el pollito en el cuadro es la frágil y amenazada Frida mientras otros están convencidos de que, debido a su majestuosa estatura y postura confidente, es el esposo de Frida, Diego.

Si de veras es Frida, entonces el cuadro probablemente simboliza el frágil estado emocional de Frida y su estado físico en ese momento. Su relación con Diego que se estaba derrumbando, la muerte de su padre y su salud que estaba empeorando, así como la cirugía pendiente de su espalda, todo la dejó exhausta emocionalmente. El frágil pollito, Kahlo se ve amenazado por dos arañas y esta ahí de pie, impotente esperando el encontrarse con su destino.

Si el pollito en la pintura es Diego, entonces el cuadro tiene un significado completamente diferente. El pollito esta sentado sin ninguna protección en una pila de ramitas rotas y parece no darse cuenta o no preocuparse de la situación. Los restos en los que descansa simbolizan la relación con Kahlo que se esta desmoronando. Lilas, en el lenguaje de la flores es un símbolo de fidelidad. El ramo de lilas en la pintura está rodeado por la red de arañas…el pollito (Diego) es incapaz de llegar hasta ellas.

Ya que Kahlo no dejo documentación escrita o verbal acerca de esta pintura, podemos solo especular acerca de su autentico significado.
