When Frida painted portraits the projection of feeling and fantasy was inhibited by her concern with creating a true likeness of her subject. Her portraits are usually less intense and less original than her self-portraits. This portrait is an exception. With the extremely refined realism that Frida mastered during the 1940s, she painted the kindly, wise grandmother with such minute detail that we feel we could reach out and touch her.

In many Kahlo portraits and self-portraits, the subject is positioned in front of a wall of lush green leaves. However, in this painting, the leaves take on the colors of autumn, perhaps signifying that the subject too is in the "autumn" of her life. This portrait is one of Frida's most detailed and realistic paintings.

It is a portrait of the mother of Eduardo Morillo, an agrarian engineer employed in the diplomatic service. Eduardo commissioned Frida to paint several members of his family and he also purchased over 30 works of Frida's over the years. This beautiful painting was one of the favorites of Frida.

Cuando Frida pintaba retratos, la proyección de sentimiento y fantasía se inhibía con su preocupación de ser capaz de crear un retrato acertado del modelo. Sus retratos son normalmente menos intensos y menos originales que sus autorretratos. Este retrato es una excepción. Con el realismo extremadamente refinado que Frida llegó a dominar como un maestro durante los años 40, pintó la amable y sabia abuela con minuciosa exactitud, tanto que sentimos como si pudiéramos estirar la mano y tocarla. Este retrato es una de las más realistas y detalladas obras de Frida.

En muchos de los retratos y autorretratos de Kahlo el sujeto está colocado enfrente de un fondo de lujuriosas hojas verdes. No obstante, en este retrato, las hojas tienen los colores del otoño, quizás significando que el sujeto también está en el otoño de su vida.

Es el retrato de la madre de Eduardo Morillo, un ingeniero agrario empleado en el servicio diplomático. Eduardo encargó a Frida el pintar a varios miembros de su familia y también compró unas 30 obras de Frida durante los años. Este precioso retrato era uno de los favoritos de Frida.
