Self Portrait with Monkeys

This is yet another self-portrait in which Frida includes her pet monkeys. This painting was produced during her most prolific period, the early 1940s, in which she created several self-portraits. The background is one of tropical plants which is a common background theme used in many of her paintings.

In this self-portrait Frida may be portraying herself in an academic setting. In the year this self-portrait was painted, Frida accepted a teaching position at the School of Painting and Sculpture in Mexico City. Soon after, Frida's health took a turn for the worse and classes had to be held in her home in Coyoacán. Eventually the class dwindled to only four loyal students who called themselves "Los Fridos". Here, Frida may be portraying herself as the teacher surrounded by her four remaining students (the four monkeys).

Este es otro autorretrato en cual Frida incluye sus monos. Esta pintura fue realizada durante su período más prolífico, a principios de los años cuarenta, en el cual creó varios autorretratos. El fondo tiene plantas tropicales, tema muy común en muchas de sus pinturas.

En este autorretrato, Frida podría haberse pintado a si misma de una manera académica. El año que se pintó este autorretrato, Frida aceptó una posición como profesora en la Escuela de Pintura y Escultura en la ciudad de México. Poco después, la salud de Frida empeoró y las clases se tuvieron que celebrar en su casa en Coyoacan. Eventualmente, la clase disminuyó a sólo cuatro estudiantes leales que se llamaron a si mismos "los Fridos". Aquí, Frida se podría estar pintando a si misma como la profesora rodeada por sus cuatro estudiantes (los cuatro monos).
