Still Life (Round)

Many of Kahlo's still life paintings contain sexual references in which the fruits are transformed into sexual symbols. Sometimes the transformation is very subtle and sometimes overlooked, as in "Fruits of the Earth - 1938" while in others, as in this painting, they are very obvious. In the center of this unusual round still life lies an open papaya that has been transformed into a womb filled with sperm cells swimming about. The coral fungus next to it resembles ovaries while the open cherimoya fruit lying below the bananas resembles female genitalia.

This painting was commissioned by the wife of Mexico's President Camacho, but she refused to accept it because of its obvious sexual references.

The painting then somehow ended up in the possession of Carlos Chávez. In December of 1952, Frida wrote to Carlos requesting that he loan her the painting for an exhibition of her work. Carlos agreed to loan her the painting. The exhibit was held on April 13, 1953, in the gallery of the photographer Lola Alvarez Bravo. When the exhibition closed, the painting was not returned to Carlos. In October of 1953 and again in February of 1954, Carlos wrote to Frida requesting the painting be returned….but it never was. Some speculate that is was never returned because of an ongoing quarrel between Diego Rivera and Carlos. The painting now is on display in the Frida Kahlo Museum.

The composition and style of this painting are heavily influenced by the works of one of Frida's most admired painters, Mercedes Zamora.

Muchas de las naturalezas muertas de Kahlo contienen referencias sexuales, los frutos se convierten en símbolos sexuales. Algunas veces, las transformaciones son muy sutiles y algunas veces pasan desapercibidas, como en "Frutos de la Tierra" de 1938, mientras que en otros, como en este retrato, son muy obvios. En el centro de esta poco usual naturaleza muerta, de forma redonda (técnica llamada tondo) hay una papaya abierta que ha sido transformada en una matriz abierta, llena de espermatozoides nadando dentro. Los hongos de color coral a su lado parecen ovarios mientras que la chirimoya abierta bajo los plátanos parece genitales femeninos.

Esta pintura fue un encargo de la esposa del Presidente de México, Camacho, pero rechazó aceptarlo debido a las obvias referencias sexuales.

El cuadro entonces, de alguna manera acabó en posesión de Carlos Chávez. En diciembre de 1952, Frida escribió a Carlos solicitando que le prestara el cuadro para una exposición de su trabajo, y Carlos estuvo de acuerdo en dejárselo. La exposición se celebró el 13 de Abril de 1953, en la galería de la fotógrafa Lola Álvarez Bravo. Cuando se clausuró la exposición, el cuadro no fue devuelto a Carlos. En Octubre de 1953, y de nuevo en Febrero de 1954, Carlos le escribió a Frida pidiéndole la pintura…pero nunca fue devuelta. Algunos especulan que no se la devolvió porque Diego Rivera y Carlos estaban enemistados. El cuadro ahora se exhibe en el Museo Frida Kahlo.
