I Belong to My Owner

This painting was executed during the time when Frida was having an affair with the exiled communist Leo Trotsky. The flowers in the vase are wild and overflow the vase on to the table free of the vase. The inscriptions on the vase reads: "I belong to my owner" and "Viva Mexico". This still life could point towards the duality of Kahlo's feelings for Rivera: her obsessive love for him but also the need to break a relationship that was causing her so much pain. The whereabouts of this painting are unknown. It may have been intended as a gift for Trotsky but she decided to destroy it as she did with other paintings.

Esta pintura se ejecutó mientras Frida estaba teniendo un romance con el comunista exiliado Leo Trotsky. Las flores en el jarrón son salvajes y se salen del contenedor, llegando hasta la mesa. Las inscripciones en el jarrón dicen: "Soy de mi dueño" y "Viva México". Esta naturaleza muerta podría mostrar la dualidad de los sentimientos de Kahlo por Rivera: su amor obsesivo por él pero también la necesidad de romper una relación que le estaba causando tanto dolor. No se conoce el paradero de este cuadro. Quizás lo pintó con la idea de regalárselo a Trotsky, pero decidió destruirlo tal y como hizo con otras pinturas.
